Duties and Responsibilities
1.*Performs a variety of tasks to ensure the operational status of the telescope and its electrical power systems, drive and control systems, intercom and data acquisition systems.
2.*Uses typical electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, voltmeters and logic probes, to diagnose electronic and electrical failures.
3.*Makes repairs to a large variety of devices including digital and analog circuits, power supplies, relays, tachometers, amplifiers, and encoders. Update schematics as necessary.
4.*Assists visiting astronomers by providing technical support in adapting their scientific instruments to be used on the telescope.
5.*Reads and interprets design changes generated by engineers. Implement these changes be re-wiring and modifying electronic equipment and analyzing the effects of these changes on the telescope and/or its data acquisition system.
6.*Reads, interprets and updates a maintenance log. Carries out the instructions of supervisory engineers. Maintains an inventory of parts and performs a variety of non-technical jobs due to the remote nature of the observatory.
7.*Assemble and fabricate electronic/electrical components such as wires, cables, PC boards, connectors, terminal blocks and junction boxes.
8.*Maintain telescope and facility electrical and electronic systems
9.*Able to utilize electronic and electrical test equipment.
10.Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
1.Possession of an Associate Degree in Electronics Technology with 5 year(s) of experience or Bachelor's Degree in Electronics Engineering or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for support work (i.e. troubleshooting, repair, calibrating and maintaining electronic instrumentation); or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
2.Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of electronics as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
3.Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with electronics or electromechanical work and safety in the workplace.
4.Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
5.Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7.Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8.If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
9.Considerable knowledge of the methods, material, tools and test equipment in the construction and repair of electronic equipment.
10.Must be able to work at an elevation of 14,000 feet.
11.Must be able to work a non-standard work schedule.
12.Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver's License (class 3), comparable driver's license or use of means of transportation which meets position needs.
