HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

The Head Football Coach will work under the supervision of the Athletic Director in accordance with Verbum Dei Jesuit’s mission and must understand and appreciate the need for the football program to work with other sports as a complement to Academics and Corporate Work Study.

Verbum Dei Jesuit High School is a Jesuit, Catholic high school located in Watts with an enrollment of approximately 320 students. Part of the Cristo Rey Network (CRN), Verbum Dei Jesuit offers young men from supportive families of limited resources a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a professional work-study experience, and faith formation that prepares them to graduate from college as men for others who serve their communities and pursue a more just and humane world for all.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Verbum Dei Jesuit High School is seeking an experienced and visionary Head Football Coach to lead the rebuilding of our football program. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate, committed leader to shape a program that embodies the school’s mission of forming “men for others” who live out the values of Jesuit education. The ideal candidate will inspire student-athletes both on and off the field, cultivating an environment of academic excellence, personal growth, and community involvement. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive football program that prioritizes character development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. 
  • Mentor and motivate student-athletes to achieve their full potential academically and athletically. 
  • Collaborate with the athletic director, administration, and fellow coaches to ensure alignment with the school’s mission and values. 
  • Design and lead effective practice sessions, game strategies, and strength and conditioning programs. 
  • Partner with Campus Ministry on faith formation activities, including team prayers, retreats, and Masses. 
  • Engage in community outreach to promote Verbum Dei and its athletic program. 
  • Oversee assistant coaches, providing leadership and ensuring a cohesive coaching staff. 
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of all student-athletes by adhering to best practices in training and competition. 
  • Model and uphold standards of sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitude, and character for all involved in the program. 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. 
  • 3–5 years of successful football coaching experience, ideally at the high school or collegiate level. 
  • Commitment to Verbum Dei Jesuit’s mission and Catholic Christian values. 
  • Certifications: CEF Concussion, Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and Heat Acclimatization, and Play Like a Champion certification. 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities. 
  • Ability to build relationships with students, parents, faculty, and the broader community. 
  • Proven ability to work effectively with athletic booster clubs and experience with fundraising is a plus. 
  • Long-term commitment to developing and sustaining a positive football program. 

SALARY

$9,000 stipend
