Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical Coder specializing in hospice care to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for accurately coding medical diagnoses and procedures related to hospice services, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations, and optimizing reimbursement by utilizing the appropriate billing codes. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of hospice-specific medical terminology, coding guidelines, and insurance billing processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze patient medical records related to hospice care to extract relevant information for coding purposes.
  • Assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for all diagnoses and procedures performed in a hospice setting based on clinical documentation.
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of codes to maximize reimbursement for hospice services rendered.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, including nurses and physicians, to clarify documentation and improve coding accuracy specific to hospice care.
  • Stay updated on changes in coding regulations, payer requirements, and healthcare laws that impact hospice billing to ensure compliance.
  • Conduct regular audits of coding practices to identify areas for improvement and ensure adherence to hospice coding guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit claims to insurance companies for hospice services, following up on denials and appeals as necessary.
  • Maintain detailed records of coded data and billing submissions for reporting purposes.
  • Provide training and support to staff on hospice coding practices and billing processes as needed.
  • Occasionally travel to client locations for on-site evaluations or training as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; an associate degree in health information technology or related field is preferred.
  • Certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 4 to 7 years of proven experience in medical coding, with a focus on hospice care preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and hospice-specific guidelines.
  • Proficient in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Allscripts, as well as billing software like MediSoft or AdvancedMD.
  • Familiarity with coding software and tools such as 3M CodeFinder or Optum360 EncoderPro.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in coding and billing practices specific to hospice services.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to problem-solve effectively.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Working Conditions

The Medical Coder will work in an office environment in Chandler, AZ, with standard working hours. Flexibility may be required based on workload demands. Occasional travel to client locations may be necessary.
