The Interpreter is responsible to provide effective and accurate oral communication between patient, patient’s family and clinical staff and professionals.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Becomes liaison between CRS staff and non-English-speaking patients, their relatives or representatives.
  • Utilizes multi-lingual knowledge and English language to effectively communicate verbally with the patient, patient’s representative, clinic personnel, physicians and healthcare professionals.
  • Advocates on behalf of non-English speaking patients as appropriate.
  • Interprets and communicates medical terminology, assessments, patient education, consent forms, patient instructions and explains any other medical procedure that will influence healthcare outcomes.
  • Documents communication from non-English speakers in EMR and routes messages appropriately.
  • Maintains personal and professional responsibility.
  • Adheres to the Interpreter Code of Ethics as defined by the National Council for Interpretation in Healthcare (NCIHC)
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work calmly with others in hectic situations.
  • In-depth knowledge of Spanish and English medical terminology.
  • Sensitive to patients personal circumstances, and able to maintain confidentiality and ethics.
  • Uses time effectively.
  • Follows safety policies for self and patients.
  • Performs in a manner that enhances customer service.
  • Independently maintains required tests, licenses, certifications, competencies, employee health (TB screening, fit testing, etc.) and other job related qualifications.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or federal, state and local standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

Education or Equivalency

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year medical interpreter certification from a community college program or accredited institution.
  • Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters - CHI Certified preferred.
  • Fully bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Advanced grammar course in secondary languages preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • 1 year minimum experience interpreting in a medical setting.

Scheduled Hours of Work:

  • This is a part-time position (32 hours per week), Monday through Thursday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required and/or hours may be shortened as job duties demand.
