Position Summary: The Costume Designer/Costumer for the Oak Park and River Forest High School is part of the artistic team of the show. We are looking for a creative Costume Designer to not only help create the costume props for actors in the production but also teach our interested crew students the skills required to construct the various costumes. Your work will play a great part in setting the tone of a story and enhancing the actor's performance. This person works with the director and artistic team to create the best overall vision for the production. Looking for a collaborative teacher/leader who works well with both students and adults.
Qualifications: - Experience leading or teaching a diverse group of students.
- Proven experience in costume design, procurement and construction including sewing, crafting, pattern design.
- Ability to recruit, teach, mentor and work with student costume crew and actors.
- Knowledge of design, sewing and textiles and abilty to share that knowledge with the students.
- Understanding of a range of styles and cultural/historical elements.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- Creativity and attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate with director and production staff.
- Organized with positive attitude.
- Ability to meet sponsor expectations as stated in Student Activities Sponsor Handbook.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Studying script to understand costume requirements in terms of setting, era and character attributes.
- Performing research on historical periods and different regions.
- Developing costume plots for characters.
- Study script to understand costume requirements in terms of setting, era and character attributes.
- Creating preliminary sketches/pictures of costumes and present them to director for approval.
- Producing the final designs along with the crew costume students.
- Renting or buying ready costumes when necessary.
- Ensuring costumes stay within budget.
- Supervising all fittings and performances and attend rehearsals including all rehearsals for the two weeks before production.
- Distributing, inventorying and collecting all costume pieces assigned/handed out. Submitting student obligations to the Business Office for any pieces that are not returned.
- Assuming responsibility of returning, storing or disposing used costumes after production.
- Supervising responsibilities of the Green Room during tech week and production.
- Attending Sponsor Meetings and meet expectations given by the Student Activities Director.
