Job Posting: Peer Support Specialist – Crisis (Substance Use, Mental Health, Youth & Family)

Position Summary:
Peer Support Specialists provide immediate support, mentorship, and guidance to individuals of all ages experiencing mental health or substance use crises. Using their own lived experience in recovery, they offer emotional support, model hope, and help individuals stabilize, navigate services, and stay engaged in their recovery goals. Support may extend to homes, schools, and community settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide emotional support during crises and assist with de-escalation.

  • Mentor and guide individuals using lived experience, helping set and achieve recovery goals.

  • Assist clients in navigating mental health, substance use, educational, and community resources.

  • Facilitate peer support groups for adults, youth, and families.

  • Collaborate with clinical teams to support treatment engagement and stabilization.

  • Provide supportive services as needed (e.g., transportation, medication assistance).

  • Maintain accurate documentation and model healthy coping strategies.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Personal lived experience in mental health, substance use, or youth/family recovery challenges.

  • Minimum of 2 years of sobriety for SUD peer support roles.

  • Peer certification in at least one specialty area (Substance Use Recovery, Mental Health, or Youth & Family) required; working knowledge of all three areas preferred.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work traditional and non-traditional hours (evenings, weekends, on-call).

  • Empathy, trauma-informed awareness, and ability to maintain professional boundaries.

Preferred:

  • One year of experience supporting individuals with behavioral health challenges.

  • Familiarity with recovery resources and treatment systems.
