Job Description

Overview

Family Nurturing Center of Massachusetts (FNC) was founded in 1994 with the mission to build nurturing communities where children are cherished, families are supported, and healthy human development is promoted by all. For more than 30 years, FNC has provided free family engagement programs in Bostons underserved neighborhoods, offered nationally recognized training and technical assistance, and led pilot initiatives that have shaped family support practices statewide and nationally.

Each year, FNC engages over 7,500 children, caregivers, and professionals. Our programs are offered in multiple languages and are grounded in values of equity, collaboration, and family leadership. In 2020, FNC opened a 12,800-square-foot headquarters in Dorchester, expanding its capacity to serve families and strengthen community partnerships.

With a staff of 69 (full and part-time), a committed cross-sector board of directors, and an annual operating budget of $6.5M, FNC is a financially stable and mission-driven organization poised for continued impact.

Opportunity

FNC is currently navigating a leadership transition as Executive Director Emma Tobin embarks on her next chapter. To provide stability and continuity during this period, the Board is adopting a Co-Executive Director model on an interim basis.

Co-Executive Director, Advancement (Emma Tobin) will focus on fundraising, communications, and strategic partnerships.

Co-Executive Director, Operations (this role) will lead day-to-day operations, finance, human resources, and internal program support.

This shared model ensures strong leadership across all aspects of the organization while the Board conducts a search for permanent executive leadership.

The Co-Executive Director, Operations, will play a pivotal role in ensuring that FNCs staff, systems, and programs remain strong and well-coordinated during this period of transition. The role requires a skilled and steady nonprofit leader with a strong background in operations, finance, HR, and organizational management, who can nurture staff culture and sustain high-quality programming.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Management

  • Provide day-to-day leadership of internal operations across finance, HR, programs, and operations (technology, facilities, internal communications).
  • Supervise the Director of Programs, HR & Operations Manager, and Consulting CFO.
  • Partner with the External-Facing Co-Executive Director to ensure consistent organizational leadership, communication, and alignment with the strategic plan.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and nurturing staff culture that reflects FNCs mission and values.

Finance & Operations

  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and reporting in partnership with the Consulting CFO.
  • Staff and support the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Manage facilities operations across FNCs four sites, including vendor relations, technology systems, and risk management.
  • Lead organizational systems improvements, including internal communications, data management, and administrative processes.

Human Resources

  • Supervise the HR & Operations Manager and provide leadership in talent management, policy setting, and compliance.
  • Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention efforts.
  • Ensure a supportive and equitable workplace environment aligned with FNCs JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) values and goals.

Program Support

  • Supervise the Interim Director of Programs and ensure the successful implementation of programmatic goals in year two of the strategic plan.
  • Lead or support the search process for a permanent Director of Programs, depending on timing and current needs.
  • Support program evaluation and internal collaboration across departments.

Board Engagement

  • Co-plan and facilitate bi-monthly board meetings with the External-Facing Co-Executive Director.
  • Serve as primary liaison to board members focused on finance, operations, and program oversight.

Qualifications and Experiences

There are innumerable ways to learn, grow, and excel professionally. We respect this when we review applications and take a broad look at the experience of each applicant. We want to get to know you and the unique strengths you will bring to the work. That said, we are most likely to be interested in your candidacy if you can demonstrate the majority of the qualifications and experiences listed below:

  • Minimum 7 years of senior management experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Strong background in financial management, budgeting, and operations.
  • Experience supervising diverse teams and fostering inclusive, collaborative work environments.
  • Knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and talent management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with family support services, Boston communities, or human services organizations preferred.

This is a full-time, interim position based in Dorchester, MA, with some flexibility for local remote work, and is expected to last 612 months.
